Lunch conversations Nhu: I think you're too nice to be a grad student Cecilia: really? in what sense? Nhu: whenever the professor tells you to do something, you will just do it. When my prof tells me to do something I'd always go against him. Cecilia: hm... i guess it's Asian culture... my upbringing, I've always been indoctrinated since young not to go against older people. Nhu: haha.. yeah, I guess you people are more... erm.. submissive? Cecilia: maybe, but I think it's not really good for myself. I don't dare to voice out my opinions. I have to train myself in this area I guess... Nhu: yeah... the more I hear this from you, the more I don't wanna stay here (in SG, ed.) Cecilia: how come? Nhu: there's a lack of freedom here. Cecilia: I actually prefer it this way. Total freedom like in the US? Means people can carry guns, use drugs, etc..
