Starry, Starry Night...

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and grey
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colours on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds and violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colours changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artists' loving hand

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you

Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They're not listening still
Perhaps they never will...

This song depicts the famous painting, Starry Night, by Vincent van Gogh. Its lyrics beautifully describes the magnificent work of art, every detailed scratch of paint on the canvas expresses the tumult of the artist's emotions during his lifetime, possibly around the time when he was painting the Starry Night; a time of his life, which some people thought he was not in a state of sanity. He was locked in an asylum for a short period of time, just before the time of his death. His only confidante was his elder sister, to whom he addressed many correspondences which expressed his agony, his disagreements to the ways of the world. In the end, disillusioned by the world, Vincent committed suicide. Ironically, the artist's name was never recognized, nor his works of art appreciated, in the slightest, until after his death.

Sometimes, I can't help thinking, how it would have felt being Vincent. Being misunderstood all his life, ignored by most people, disregarded and mocked at, which eventually lead him to despair. The world can often be a place of disillusionment. Reality sucks big time, and people are just either too stupid to be bothered about others, or too lazy to recognize truth and put themselves in other people’s shoes. They keep ranting on and on about what they themselves believe, things that justify themselves. Things such as why they are right, why their religion is the most righteous, why others cannot reach enlightenment, or even such audacity as to judge people’s right to enter heaven by presenting their own formula.

Sometimes I thought I could feel what Vincent would have felt at that time. Sad, disillusioned, and misunderstood. And if I were there, perhaps I would also have told Vincent, that the world was never meant for one as beautiful as him…
